Case Study - Highway Surveillance |
|
Thailand, 2008
Traditional Traffic monitoring systems are designed in a star network, then linked to a central layer 3 switch. Any unexpected link failure can result in a loss of the video stream. By applying Korenix Redundant Ring technology, any link failure will be recovered in just 5ms. You will feel confident and assured in the time-saving and continuous surveillance network!

Legacy Solution for Highway Surveillance: Costly & No Redundancy
To deliver live images to the central monitor center, each station is connected to the central center with a fiber. The fiber length range from several kilometers to hundreds of kilometers. In each station, network switches are chosen according to the number of cameras. The more cameras, the more ports of the switches. As a result, high-port density, rack-mount switches are used in the AC equipment room. In case of system failure, additional PTZ cameras are setup for redundancy. The operators depend on a back-end management software to detect a network failure. Once a failure occurs, the software notifies the operator, and the operator can then move the PTZ camera to cover the area where the images are lost.
This solution has several drawback
- Costly: There are lots of long-distance fibers, additional PTZ cameras and the spaces in AC equipment room for the rackmount switches. It also requires costly leased managed services and many costly MUX cards for the layer 3 chassis switch.
- No redundancy: the star network topology does not provide any link redundancy. A link failure result in loss of images. It depends on the operator to recover the failure. The typical recovery time is more than several minutes.
Korenix Innovative Solution: Enhances Reliabilty While Reducing Total Cost

Korenix changes the architecture of highway surveillance. The biggest difference is Korenix using redundant ring technology to connect 3~4 stations into a ring. Each ring protects the network from a link failure. Any link failure are recovered within 5ms before the operator notice the failure. It guarantees a non-stopping video transmission. This architecture reduces the cost by eliminating the additional PTZ cameras and the long-distance fibers from each station to the central room.
- Reliable: MSR redundant ring
- Flexible: SFP distance/bandwidth
- Lower cost than EDGE switch / MUX
- Less leased managed services
